Farming for the Future: Why Regenerative Agriculture Matters

Farming for the Future: Why Regenerative Agriculture Matters

Environmental responsibility and sustainability are more than buzzwords at La Tourangelle; they’re at the heart of everything we do.

Every decision has a ripple effect on our planet and that’s why we're dedicated to producing the finest cooking oils and ensuring that every aspect of our products, from solar-powered production to recyclable tin packaging, reflects our high standards and values.

Our recently expanded line of Certified Regenerative Organic products is part of that plan. We believe that investing in regenerative agriculture can help reverse climate change and preserve our planet’s beauty.

But what is regenerative organic and how is it different?

What is "Regenerative Organic"?

Products and farms that are Regenerative Organic Certified™ (ROC) or Certified Regenified represent the gold standard in terms of environmental stewardship, animal welfare and social responsibility.

Choosing these products supports farming systems that are proven to support and build, or regenerate, the planet's resources.

These certifications have relatively new and rigorous standards which build upon the USDA Organic certification. To receive a Regenerative Organic Certification, a product must first be certified organic and then meet additional criteria that promote regenerative practices.

These practices actively improve the soil, protect animals, pay fair wages and remove carbon from the atmosphere. Techniques like cover cropping, crop rotation, reduced tillage and composting are used to promote soil fertility and health. What does Organic mean?

For consumers, choosing organic products means supporting farming practices that avoid synthetic chemicals and prioritize the health of the ecosystem.

In the United States, the USDA Organic label ensures that a product has been produced without the use of synthetic pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and synthetic fertilizers. Click here for the complete list of prohibited substances.

Organic certification also involves regular inspections and adherence to strict guidelines. For example, organic livestock must be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviors, fed 100% organic feed and not given antibiotics or hormones.

Organic farming is a step in the right direction, but it does not necessarily address all aspects of environmental impact. Organic regulations can vary from country to country and organic farms can still face challenges, such as soil degradation, if they do not implement additional regenerative practices.

Navigating the Marketplace

Choosing products that align with your values is a powerful way to vote with your wallet, but in a world filled with complex marketing claims, it’s hard to know if you’re making the right choice.

Understanding the differences between claims, like sustainable, and certifications, like organic or regenerative organic, can help you make choices that make a real difference every time you shop. Certifications like USDA Organic and Regenerative Organic Certified provide transparency and assurance that the products meet specific standards.

By making conscious choices and supporting transparent and ethical companies, consumers can drive positive change and contribute to a healthier planet for generations to come.
